The V10s really were something else. People say they missed the V8s but they were ruined once the artificial RPM limits were imposed. It was a real shame since the V8s were pretty bulletproof (for an F1 racing engine) by the end of their life, when RPMs could’ve been a lot higher; I think these were capable of running at 22,000 rather than 18,000 when they were phased out.
However, the V10s just had a really unique noise. I don't agree with the thinking that the lack of noise is killing F1 (many other things are killing it) but these were real screamers.

You got that right. It is one of my dreams to hear one of these shrieking at full throttle to the top of the rev range in real life. That signature extra piercing sound when they get close to the rev limiter is just so damn good.
I agree. People need to realize why formula 1 is the way it is. It was always as much a driver centric sport as it was an engineering sport. Yeah it’s cool to have drivers being taken to the limit but I also want to see cars being taken to their limit! I want to see what the engineers can do when they’re allowed to turn it up to 11.

I’m honestly just looking for an excuse to post this video, but I genuinely think you’ll enjoy this, apparently the last low fuel qualifying session, at least for V10s.

I got goosebumps throughout this clip - one thing that I will concede to those who believe the noise is an essential part of F1 is that the sound matches how manic these laps appear. It’s a shame because these modern hybrid power units are quite powerful and should be difficult to drive due to the instant power delivery but when you watch a lap of Lewis or Nico they just make it look so easy, and it doesn’t quite give you that same feeling that these V10 screamers do. I really do understand the whole noise argument, but when you have a really good race the noise is really a non-issue.
It’s also quite sad to think that Alonso was 23 while at Renault (2005 or 2006, I guess) and in all this time the new boys Hamilton and Vettel have wrapped up 7 titles total while he has only managed two. Kimi deserved at least one title but 2007 involved a great bit of luck as well; Button was at the right place at the right time and made the most of it. The best thing he did in all of 2015 was hop on the podium with Button for a few photos and become a F1 meme of sorts in Brazil (which I have to admit ended up with funny results). That said, to think that Kimi only has one title is surprising, too, given the manner in which he entered F1 and so quickly rose to a top team.

I don’t think I’ll ever hear a NA F1 engine in person unless it’s at a car show (like Goodwood). I have only myself to blame because I became a fan of F1 in 2008, probably had reasonable opportunities to go to Montreal between 2010 and 2013 but never managed to do so. My only consolation is that it was during the most uninteresting period of the V8 engine, and what I really want to hear is this V10 or even the V12s that came before.

Are you serious?
*googles*
oOOOOOOOOOOooohh.
I will now be looking into how to modify seat sliders and removable steering wheels so I can fit into a Miata, purchase this kit, and hoon accordingly.

I share your pain. I didn’t get really into F1 until the 2011 season. By then it was the ending of the v8s. I can only hope that somebody brings a former F1 car to car week at Monterey. Or I hope to find a way to vacation in Italy. Then maybe I’ll have to be lucky enough to be there while they are letting their Corse Clienti cars run wild.

“I really do understand the whole noise argument, but when you have a really good race the noise is really a non-issue.”
I think this is probably the best way to put it.
I only really started following F1 and motorsports in general a few years ago, (and even before the new turbo era, with drs, it wasn’t too exciting), and I find myself constantly amazed by the early-mid 2000s. I used to watch some of the races (I don’t think I had the patience back then when i was 7 or 8 or so to sit through races) with my dad on sunday mornings on the couch, I had never really followed the careers of the drivers, but I do somewhat now.
I think the constant evolution of F1 is something that can’t be stopped or changed suddenly. It’s a sport with a lot of moving parts, and sometimes I wonder why they bother with things like Parc Ferme and crap like that. I’m just really tired of compromises and drivers not being able to push limits due to tire wear (ugh don’t even get me started on the tires) and engine use restrictions, fuel flow limiting etc.
I don’t claim to know enough to be able to make good changes to the sport but I think there’s so so much untapped potential with these hybrid powertrains and the available technology today but it’s all being hampered by regulations and compromises they have to make to abide to the rules.
With such a complex sport it’s hard to get my thoughts all together cuz my mind just goes all over the place but yeah I think this era is for sure the pinnacle.
